Scientists from the Lille University of Science and Technology in France confirmed that foods rich in resistant starch (bananas, legumes, sweet potatoes, white rice) can reduce inflammation in the body and improve digestion. Research results published In Frontiers in Nutrition.
The study by French scientists is a scientific review of existing studies examining the properties of resistant starch and its impact on human health. Resistant starch (resistant starch or indigestible starch) is starch that is not broken down by pancreatic enzymes. The working mechanism of resistant starch is similar to the principle of digestion of dietary fiber (fibre). When it enters the large intestine, it becomes food for beneficial bacteria.
A scientific review found that resistant starch’s positive effects on the gut microbiome also promote good digestion and reduce the risk of constipation and bloating. It is stated that bananas, sweet potatoes, legumes, white rice, corn and cashews are rich in resistant starch.
Consuming these foods may also reduce inflammation in the body, according to other studies included in the review. Most likely, this is due to their antioxidant abilities, that is, their ability to neutralize the oxidative, cell-damaging effects of free radicals and other substances.
