Pharmacological products containing estrogen may increase a person’s risk of developing cancer. Anton Ivanov, oncologist, oncosurgeon, chemotherapeutic surgeon, candidate of medical sciences and chief physician of the MAMMA clinic, told socialbites.ca about the effect of some drugs on the occurrence of cancer.
“Drugs that can cause cancer include oral contraceptives and drugs prescribed to women during menstrual irregularities or menopause,” he added.
However, the doctor emphasized that the risk of tumors resulting from these drugs will only be higher with excessive and misuse of drugs.
“Antidepressants can trigger breast cancer because they increase the level of prolactin, which affects the receptor activity and sensitivity of the mammary glands. Medicines used to treat myelodysplastic syndrome, a condition in which the bone marrow does not produce enough healthy mature blood cells. Therapy is not complete without hypomethylating agents. It is these drugs that awaken a hitherto inactive oncogene, which triggers acute leukemia,” explained the expert.
The oncologist also added to this list tablets containing N-nitrosodimethylamine for ulcers and heartburn. This substance has a bad effect on the functioning of the liver and intestines, and can also trigger the development of cancer.
“Combined oral contraceptives can also cause cancer. These tablets have many side effects, one of the most dangerous is thrombosis,” he said.
