The city of Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand ranked first in the list of the most polluted cities in the world. This was reported by portal Phys.org cites data from the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.
According to international air quality monitoring service IQAir, the level of PM2.5 microdust in Chiang Mai’s air was 35 times higher than the safe threshold set by the World Health Organization.
As journalists note, the dense smoke in Chiang Mai is connected with the tradition of local farmers to burn the remnants of last year’s vegetation in the fields in order to clear the land for the new season. The problem is exacerbated by forest fires and vehicle exhaust fumes.
In March, the Thai government warned that action was needed to combat air pollution, with at least 10 million residents of the province needing treatment due to poor ecology by 2023.
Despite the stifling fog, Chiang Mai continues its high tourist season. According to the interviewed city guests, the smoke does not prevent them from enjoying the numerous temples and other attractions of the ancient city.
