Scientists from the University College Cork School of Public Health in Ireland found that middle-aged and older people with obesity have an increased risk of developing depression. Women are particularly susceptible to this mental disorder. Research results published In the journal PLOS One.

In the study, researchers analyzed data from more than 1,800 adult volunteers, aiming to explore the relationship between a given body mass index (BMI) and mental health characteristics. Each of the 1,821 subjects provided researchers with access to their medical records and had blood tests to assess glycated hemoglobin and glucose levels. The scientists also measured the participants’ height, weight and waist circumference.

Analysis of the data showed that high BMI (its indicator corresponded to obesity) was associated with worsening mental health. Middle-aged and older adults, especially those with obesity, were more likely to show symptoms of depression. This association was particularly evident in women with high BMI.

According to scientists, this deterioration in mental health may be due to social factors such as stigmatization of overweight people.
