Scientists from the Medical College of Wisconsin in the USA found that women injured in traffic accidents experience severe traumatic shock more often than men. Research results published In the journal Frontiers in Public Health.
During the study, scientists analyzed data from more than 56 thousand car accident victims, half of whom were women. They found that men overall were more likely to be injured in road traffic crashes. But they were less likely to suffer liver and pelvic injuries compared to women.
Researchers also found that women who had been in car accidents presented to hospitals with a higher traumatic shock index, regardless of the severity of their injuries. This is a pathological condition that occurs as a result of blood loss and pain during injury and seriously threatens human life.
It is stated that severe traumatic shock may be an early warning sign of hemorrhagic shock, which is a complex of hemodynamic and metabolic disorders that occur as a result of acute, severe blood loss.
Scientists have suggested that the female body has a poorer ability to function during physiological changes caused by certain injuries. The study authors also noted that women may be less able than men to cope with blood loss.
