The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Wegovy to prevent heart attack, stroke, and death due to heart disease. This was reported by health day.

The new study included nearly 18,000 patients who received Vegovi or a placebo injection. They also took medications to lower cholesterol and blood pressure and received counseling on exercise and healthy eating.

Taking Vegovi significantly reduced the risk of serious adverse cardiovascular events. It occurred in 6.5% of participants taking the drug and 8% of participants taking a placebo.

Vegovi was previously approved for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. It may cause side effects: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue, indigestion (stomach upset), dizziness, belching, bloating, and heartburn. Patients may also experience acute kidney injury, eye damage, pancreatitis, or gallstones.
