Scientists from the University of Tromsø in Norway found that having one parent being obese triples the child’s risk of contracting the disease. This is due not only to genes but also to lifestyle. Research results published In the journal Obesity.

More than two thousand people aged 40-59 participated in the research. The scientists collected information about the subjects’ health and weight, and also determined whether their parents were obese. Analysis of the data showed that having even one obese parent triples the risk of developing the disease in children.

The authors noted that genes play an important role in susceptibility to weight gain. However, it cannot be said that the cause of obesity is always due to genetic predisposition. In most cases, weight gain is due to poor eating habits ingrained in the family. These include frequent consumption of fatty, high-calorie foods and a preference for passive rest.

Previously was named Visual impairment associated with increased risk of obesity and diabetes.
