Scientists from Stanford University have discovered that one of the consequences of long-term COVID-19 may be increased sensitivity to alcohol and increased hangover symptoms. Research results published In Cureus magazine.
During the study, scientists collected information about the health of adult subjects who reported increased sensitivity to alcohol due to coronavirus infection. Some volunteers reported that after recovery they could not tolerate even small doses of alcohol. The consequences of drinking alcohol often include severe headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, and mental confusion.
Scientists have found that exposure to coronavirus can lead to changes in the human body at the cellular level. In particular, viruses such as COVID-19 can weaken the blood-brain barrier, a cell lining in the brain’s blood vessels that helps keep pathogens out.
This means that the blood-brain barrier becomes vulnerable to the effects of alcohol, which is a toxin. The penetration of toxins and chemicals into the brain triggers the inflammatory process in the body, which leads to poor health.
