Scientists from the University of South Australia confirmed the hypothesis that increasing the level of physical activity during the day helps improve the quality of sleep at night. Research results published In the journal Sleep Health.

The study used health and physical activity data from 1,168 children (mean age 12) and 1,360 adults (parents of minors) with an average age of 44 years. Scientists recorded what time of day all participants were most physically active and compared this data with indicators of sleep quality.

They found that children and adults with higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous daytime physical activity had less restless sleep, fewer night wakings, and reduced daytime fatigue. What’s more, physical activity was directly associated with increased sleep efficiency (time spent in bed actually spent resting). It is stated that going to bed earlier and allocating additional time for this often causes more restless sleep.
