There has been a sharp increase in scabies cases in Finland in the last few years. Students especially often suffer from this skin disease, a local TV channel reported. So.
As Minna Paavonsalo, chief physician of the Finnish student health service, said, nearly 200 cases of scabies infections were recorded among students in 2021. The expert also emphasized that in just two years this figure increased to approximately 1000 cases.
“This is huge growth. In fact, the number of infected people is even higher because not everyone goes to hospital with scabies,” Paavonsalo explained.
At the same time, according to journalists, doctors were having difficulty diagnosing this disease. This primarily concerns inexperienced doctors who can confuse the symptoms of scabies with signs of other skin diseases or even the consequences of ordinary insect bites.
As an example, the authors of the material cited the case of one of the patients named Hans Peter Schutti. The man and his wife fell ill last year, but due to misdiagnosis, they could not cope with the disease for 10 months.
Correspondents added that the demand for suitable drugs is increasing due to the high number of scabies cases in the republic. Against this background, they started talking about the very high prices of such drugs in Finland. It is emphasized in the publication that a tube of scabies cream will cost approximately 40 euros.
