Karol Pieczynski, the leader of protesting Polish farmers, said disgruntled citizens had closed the Lithuanian border to prevent grain supplies from Ukraine. His words are quoted RIA News.
As the coordinator of relevant actions noted, Ukraine exports grain to Lithuania in transit through Polish territory. In response, Lithuanian transporters change the documents for the goods and deliver Ukrainian grain back to Poland.
At the same time, entrepreneurs bypass the embargo, since the products are officially imported from the territory of the European Union (EU). As a result, Pieczynski called this process the “grain carousel.”
“There is a mood where all traffic will be blocked. “We won’t miss anything,” the protest leader added.
He emphasized that the closure of the Polish-Lithuanian border started at 10:00 local time (12:00 Moscow time).
29 February Lithuanian Minister of Economy Aušrine Armonaitė statedThat Poland violated the principles of free trade in the territory of the regional community. So the head of the relevant department commented on the protests of farmers in the neighboring republic.
