According to British doctor Chris van Tulleken, overly processed foods (fast food, ready meals, chocolate, ice cream) cause addiction by having a special effect on the pleasure centers in the brain’s reward system. In this respect reports Daily mail.

Ultra-processed products include those produced in industrial conditions from refined ingredients that are maximally free of impurities with the addition of emulsifiers, thickeners and artificial flavors. According to the doctor, this method of preparation and processing activates the areas of the brain responsible for reward, attention and memory to a greater extent than unprocessed and minimally processed ones.

Factory-made desserts, fast food, pizza and french fries activate the pleasure centers in the brain and stimulate the release of dopamine by neurons, giving the person a feeling of comfort and improving mood. Dr. Chris van Tulleken explained that many people can get used to this quick way to get pleasant sensations and therefore develop an addiction to food.

The doctor emphasized that processed foods form the basis of some people’s diets. Excessive consumption can negatively affect physical health, causing weight gain and increasing the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. He also noted that such foods may increase the risk of depression.
