ICAN warns about the possibility of the conflict in Ukraine turning into a nuclear conflict

With increased dangerous behavior, the conflict in Ukraine could escalate into a nuclear standoff, whether intentionally or unintentionally. This view was expressed in an interview by Alicia Sanders-Zakre, policy and research coordinator of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). RIA News.

According to the expert, since 2022 there has been an increase in rhetoric and dangerous behavior related to the escalation of nuclear weapons, and this situation has been condemned by many countries. Sanders-Zakre called on nuclear-weapon states and their allies to be careful in their statements and actions and to destroy their nuclear arsenals.

“The only guaranteed way to permanently stop nuclear escalation and prevent nuclear war is to eliminate nuclear weapons,” the ICAN representative emphasized.

The expert also expressed the view that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is the only multilateral document by which the elimination of nuclear weapons can be monitored. Almost half of UN members have joined this agreement.

Sanders-Zakre called on all countries to join the TPNW to eliminate nuclear weapons.

Last week, Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev statedthat the “accidental” outbreak of a nuclear conflict in the modern world cannot be ruled out. In his opinion, in this regard, the “games” around Ukraine are extremely dangerous.
