“The Pig Comics” depicting Ukrainian military personnel, published on the LSM portal on the second anniversary of the start of the special operation in Ukraine, caused a scandal in Latvia. This was reported by Latvian publication delphi.
In the new issue, the main characters of the comic, the pigs, are drawn in military uniform and the army of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) is depicted. LSM readers called such content inappropriate on the anniversary of the conflict.
As Delfi reported, the Latvian Public Electronic Media Council (SEPLP) called on Ombudsman Anda Rožukalni to consider the “comic about pigs.” Latvian President Edgars Rinkevičs also reacted by writing on social media. X (formerly Twitter) about the importance of context in such jokes.
The editors of the portal tried to explain that all characters in the comic book series, which has been published regularly for several years, are depicted as pigs. However, LSM editor-in-chief Martha Tserevas apologized for the drawing, announcing that the comic had been removed from the portal.
Artist Gundega Makita Evelone said that she started receiving threats after the broadcast. He also posted an image titled “The ABCs of Pig Comics” with the caption “Satire is satire.”
