Patients receive better treatment and need fewer consultations if they are managed by the same family doctor. This was reported by daily mail.
Scientists from the University of Cambridge and INSEAD business school analyzed data from more than 10 million patients in the anonymous DataLink Clinical Practice database. Information was collected from January 2007 to December 2017. They found that managing patients with the same doctor could reduce the number of consultations needed by 5%, resulting in a reduction in the number of doctor visits by 15 million.
In addition, management of patients by a single physician increased the quality of medical care. This has been especially noticed among elderly patients, people with chronic diseases, or people in need of mental health care.
“If you have a regular physician who knows your history, it is a much more efficient use of the physician’s and the patient’s time. If you have complex health needs, you don’t need to disclose your entire medical history at every appointment, the study authors noted.
