Atherosclerosis occurs several times more often in men than in women. Therefore, men are more prone to heart attack and stroke. In this respect “Izvestia” Olga Ulankina, a medical specialist at the Hemotest laboratory, said:
“According to statistics, atherosclerosis is several times more common in men than in women. If left untreated, this disease can lead to dangerous consequences such as stroke or heart attack. With atherosclerosis, cholesterol plaques form on the walls of large vessels. Over time, they increase in size and narrow the lumen of the blood vessels. “Blood flow to tissues and organs is impaired, they do not receive the necessary amount of nutrients and oxygen,” explained Ulankina.
The doctor added that men’s hearts are larger and their heartbeats are slower than women’s. Men also have higher blood pressure, making them more susceptible to heart attacks and strokes.
In addition, since blood vessels in women are more elastic due to sex hormones, the risk of developing atherosclerosis is lower. For the same reason, women are less likely to get blood clots.
Ulankina explained that the risk of developing atherosclerosis can be assessed using a blood test for triglycerides and “good” and “bad” cholesterol.
