dangerous bindweed
Deputy from the Communist Party faction in the State Duma, Sergei Gavrilov, warned Russians not to grow tricolor morning glory at their dachas, the agency reported RIA News.
“It is no longer possible to grow the popular multi-colored garden flower, morning glory tricolor, on a plot of land, which all grandmother-cottage owners love to plant along fences,” Gavrilov said.
According to him, the person who grows a multi-colored garden flower, known among summer residents as “bindweed” or “gramophone”, may face criminal penalties, including imprisonment for up to two years. The fact is that the substances contained in the seeds of this plant are hallucinogenic. (causes distortions in perception)provide narcotics (It affects the central nervous system, causing addiction) action.
As the MP explained, if the number of bindweeds on a site exceeds 100 loaches, this is classed as a breach of the law. Possessing or taking even three grams of plant seeds is considered a crime.
Don’t get banned
Gavrilov pointed out that gardeners could face penalties if they do not take measures to destroy wild drug-containing plants. He said that, like bindweed in the field, this plant proliferates rapidly, is found along roadsides, in bushes, and “grows like a weed everywhere.”
Evgeny Abizov, Associate Professor, Department of Doping and Drug Control, Russian Chemical Technology University, comments “I will rise” He noted that a layperson would have difficulty distinguishing morning glory tricolor from similar plants:
“Ipomoea is common, yes. It can mostly be grown in garden areas as an ornamental plant, grown on poles. The problem is how to distinguish them, because if you pay attention to the leaves, it is very easy for a non-expert to confuse it with other representatives of the bindweed plant.”
He advised gardeners to purchase seeds from well-known, reliable brands to avoid accidentally encountering “forbidden” seeds. The scientist also noted that even if morning glory was accidentally planted at the cottage, “it is not difficult to lime this plant.”
“Annual bindweeds produce abundant seeds and survive as seeds the next year. Perennials – just remove the rhizomes. Annuals should be weeded out and dug up,” the expert said.
Conclusions for summer residents
February 9 Russian government extended 12 substances were added to the list of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances subject to control in the country. The list included dangerous substances such as synthetic cannabinoids, tryptamines and benzodiazepines.
With the same decision, the Council of Ministers was expanded list Controlled plants whose use in Russia produces narcotic effects. Ipomoea tricolor, turbinate corymbose and common harmala have been added to the list.
How said Summer residents most likely did not even know that morning glory tricolor can have a narcotic effect, says “socialbites.ca” Valentin Vvedensky, Head of the Department of Genetics, Plant Breeding and Plant Protection at RUDN University. According to him, for gardeners the news that the cultivation of this plant is banned will not be disappointing:
“I think gardeners who grow such beautiful flowers will not suffer much if the tricolor sinks into oblivion. There are white ones, there are lilac ones, there are blue ones, there are yellow ones – these bindweeds come in different colors. Now you can find all these in stores. “I don’t think this will greatly impact the diversity of flower beds or decorative elements in landscape construction.”
He added that Morning Glory Tricolor grows in southern regions because it cannot withstand low temperatures, meaning it cannot grow at 3-4°C. Therefore, it grows as an annual plant in central Russia.
