Most versions of the T-80 have a powerful but relatively difficult to start gas turbine engine, and this tank was the first of its kind in the world. The T-80UD tank was developed at the Kharkov Tractor Plant and produced in the late 80s and early 90s. Some of the tanks went to Ukraine, most were sold to Pakistan, but some remained in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In Russia, these tanks were withdrawn from service due to obsolescence and the availability of more powerful versions of the T-80 produced in Omsk.
