Russians catch cholera abroad, for example in Egypt and India. If left untreated, death may occur within 24 hours. Pathologist Zhanna Schmidt talked about this “Moscow region today”.
Isolated cases of cholera have been recorded in Russia, Schmidt said. Tourists visiting Egypt, India and the Caribbean often get sick. The bacteria that cause cholera were also found on the territory of Ukraine: in the Black and Azov Seas, in the Dnieper, Dniester and Southern Bug rivers. Swimming and fishing were banned in Mariupol in 2011 due to the risk of cholera infection.
“Dehydration occurs very quickly in cholera. The disease is highly contagious and spreads rapidly from person to person. It can spread through water and food. Therefore, if you let things go your way, things can end badly. But now, thanks to timely treatment, tragic consequences can be avoided in most cases,” Schmidt continues.
WHO reported that the number of cholera cases exceeded 40 thousand people in January 2024, and 700 thousand people were infected in 2023.
