In Japan, women are much less likely to give birth on weekends and holidays. Most births, especially problematic ones, occur on weekdays. The research was published in the journal PLOS One.
Scientists analyzed more than 21 million births in Japan between 1979 and 2018. Significantly more children were born on weekdays. This trend was particularly evident in births at high risk of complications, namely babies weighing less than 2500 grams at birth and preterm births. Such children were born mostly on Thursdays and Fridays.
This may indicate that medical personnel artificially changed the date of birth to occur before a weekend or holiday. The authors believe this strategy may be prudent because hospitals are often short of staff or resources on weekends. However, some women will inevitably give birth on weekends or holidays and it is important to minimize these risks.
