Cypriot scientists from the University of Nicosia have discovered which character trait is associated with people’s desire to stay away from relationships. According to their findings, this behavior stems from fear of commitment. The article was published in the scientific journal magazine Evolutionary Psychological Science (EPS).

453 people with an average age of approximately 30 participated in the online study. They completed surveys answering questions about self-esteem, partnerships, personality traits, and personal perceptions of relationships.

“In the current research, we found that one of the reasons why people feel lonely is their increased fear of relationships. Simply put, many people are afraid of entering into intimate relationships and prefer to be single instead,” explains Professor Menelaos Apostolou, lead author of the study.

The scientist added that the level of fear of a relationship predicts nuances such as satisfaction with one’s sexual life. Typically, people who find intimate relationships anxious experience less enjoyment in sex.

Overall, the research found evidence that the presence of commitment fear in relationships is determined by people’s personalities and experiences in previous relationships.

Researchers believe that finding and eliminating the causes of commitment fear will help people give up loneliness and find a partner.
