Scientists from Shenyang Agricultural University in China found that currant berries help control blood pressure. Research results published Food Science and Human Health (FSHW).

The beneficial properties of chokeberry are due to the content of polyphenols, which are plant antioxidant compounds. They can fight inflammation in the body and neutralize the oxidative effects of free radicals (special forms of oxygen), thus slowing cellular aging.

The study confirmed that currants are beneficial in treating hypertension. Aronia extracts (containing both polyphenols and non-polyphenols) can significantly reduce blood pressure due to cyanidins (hydrocyanic acid salts) and chlorogenic acid. An experiment on rats showed that daily consumption of aronia could stabilize systolic and diastolic blood pressure in rats within four weeks.

The fruits of the plant also have a diuretic effect. At the same time, thanks to antioxidants, free radicals harmful to organs are removed from the body, peroxidation of blood lipids is reduced and vascular function is improved.
