Rosstat published data on net migration outflow from new regions for the first time

From January to November 2023, 87.6 thousand people left new regions of Russia. This was reported by RBC Referring to Rosstat data.

However, the service does not publish information separately for each region.

According to demographer Igor Efremov, internal migration indicates population growth, which should not happen because internal migration is always zero. The expert suggested that in this case, we are talking about the increase in migration exchange between Russian territory and four new regions at the beginning of 2022.

Rosstat announced that mostly residents of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions prefer to move to the Krasnodar Territory or the Moscow Region. In the period January-December 2023, 14 thousand and 13.9 thousand people moved to these regions, respectively.

The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions became part of the Russian Federation following the results of the referendum held in September 2022. Martial law has been declared in the above regions since October 20.
