Ketchup, soy sauce, mustard and commercially produced Tabasco can contain a lot of sugar and salt. According to UK Department of Health experts, misuse of these products can adversely affect the heart and blood vessels. In this respect reports Daily mail.
Daily Mail experts analyzed the nutritional composition of industrial sauces from popular brands to assess their salt and sugar content. It turns out that one tablespoon of soy sauce can contain almost half of the recommended daily salt intake for an adult. Plus, the same amount of sweet chili sauce can meet almost a third of your daily sugar needs.
It is noted that English mustard of the Colman brand (contains 8.4 g of salt per 100 g of product) and Tabasco sriracha sauce (contains 6.7 g of salt per 100 ml) are also distinguished by high salt content. 100 grams of Heinz tomato ketchup contains 22.8 grams of salt; that’s about 6.8 grams per two-tablespoon serving.
Experts from the UK Department of Health do not recommend exceeding the permissible daily salt intake – it is six grams. According to them, this can lead to increased blood pressure and increased chances of heart attack and stroke.
Victoria Taylor, chief nutrition officer at the British Heart Foundation, said people often forget to keep track of the amount of salt and sugar they consume. She suggested making your own sauces based on ingredients like low-fat yogurt, garlic and vegetables.
