The second half of 2024 could be unusually cool due to the decline of El Niño, the global climate phenomenon that causes the Pacific Ocean to warm. According to reports, this is being replaced by the opposite La Niña phase Agency Reuters, based on data from the U.S. National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center.

According to forecasters, the current El Niño is expected to weaken in April-July this year. The probability of such a scenario occurring is 55%.

“Although forecasts for the spring season are generally less reliable, La Niña has a historical tendency to follow a strong El Niño event,” the Climate Prediction Center said.

The El Niño phenomenon is associated with fluctuations in the temperature of the surface layer of water in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. It has a significant impact on the climate: precipitation, atmospheric pressure and other factors. Last year this event peaked in December, but its effects could affect the global climate for several months.

La Niña and El Niño alternate every few years, creating a cycle known as the Southern Oscillation or Southern Oscillation.
