First adaptation for screens ‘Always the Same Day’, David Nicholls’ best-selling and beloved novel of 2009, was written by the author of the book himself, but it is fairly agreed that ‘It is not always the same day’. The original sentiment was missed, and it was jarring to hear New Yorker Anne Hathaway switch between accents in her role as the Leeds native.
Thirteen years after the movie, comes the version in serial format, which is much more suitable for such an episodic story. Let us recall that the book’s title responds to Nicholls’ masterful structural choice: For more than twenty years, visit the heroes always on the same day, July 15, and find out why these two people can’t stop thinking about each other, but still can’t quite have the life together they deserve.
The first day is actually a night: July 15, 1988Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) and Emma Morley (Ambika Mode) their paths crossed for the first time at the Edinburgh University senior ball. First music selection on his forehead: Chicago house classic ‘Your Love’ Frankie Knuckles. At first Dex and Em don’t have much in common, but this makes their dialectical rivalry even more exciting. He’s a good kid whose only immediate plan is to travel. Coming from a working-class family, he is a much better student and plans to change, if not the world, then at least the small part of it he is forced to occupy.. But above all, Ambika Mod leading the cast, the revelation of ‘This is going to hurt’ inspired confidence: it was Shruti, the resident doctor whose lifestyle still shocks many viewers. Alongside her, Woodall (Portia’s thuggish date in ‘The White Lotus’, season 2) holds her own as a heartwarming lunatic.
