Richard Plaud said that it took eight years and 700 thousand matches to build a wooden replica of the tower. The man hoped to get into the Guinness Book of Records this way, but the commission rejected his application, saying he used the wrong type of matches.
“As stated in the manual: Matches used must be commercially available. They concluded that my matches were not for sale,” commented Richard on this rejection.
