The risk of having a heart attack doubles in the year after a stroke caused by a blood clot. This is demonstrated in a study to be presented at the conference. American Stroke Association (ASA).

Researchers compared the risk of heart attack in groups that had experienced a stroke, carotid or vertebral artery rupture, or stroke with a control group of hospitalized patients (who had experienced a transient ischemic attack, transient amnesia, or migraine attack). a combination of these.

The authors analyzed data from more than 800,000 people hospitalized in New York between 2011 and 2017 or in Florida between 2011 and 2019. Their average age was 63 years and 62% were women. Participants with a recent head or neck injury were excluded because arterial rupture due to injury differs in nature from spontaneous rupture.

After adjusting for heart attack risk factors (diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, etc.), the study found that carotid or vertebral artery rupture without a stroke did not increase the risk of heart attack.

But after a stroke (with or without a ruptured artery), the risk of having a heart attack within a year was twice as high compared to patients in the control group.

Scientists say doctors should focus on preventing stroke to avoid heart attack in patients with a ruptured carotid artery or vertebral artery.
