In the Moscow region, zoologists plan to conduct research to assess the number of Red List amphibians of common spadefoot species. In this respect reports “Radio 1” with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Ecology of the Moscow Region. Additionally, as the ministry reported, scientists will begin to develop measures to protect this rare amphibian.
“Common spadefoot is included in the Red Book of the Moscow Region. The number of representatives of this species has been decreasing since the middle of the last century. In the early 2000s, spadefoot spadefoots were sometimes found on the territory of nine districts near Moscow, but in the last few years spadefoot spadefoots were seen only in Lukhovitsy, Kolomna and Voskresensky,” said Tikhon Firsov, head of the region’s Ministry of Ecology.
The spadefoot is similar in appearance to the brown frog, but its body is more rounded. The pupils are vertical, not round. The amphibian got its name from the characteristic smell of its skin, which protects it from enemies.
