In a survey conducted by the Weber social agency, 14 percent of Russians use fake accounts. Sometimes the purpose of creating a fake account is to hide from scammers, but sociologists warn that even the smallest amount of explicit information can trigger an attack. 69 percent of survey respondents reported attempts by attackers to break into accounts to extort money; another 7 percent admitted that they had been harmed by such actions. More than a third of survey respondents said their social media pages had been hacked at least once.

A total of 1.5 thousand adult Russians participated in the research.

Experts to warn Russians are talking about a wave of account thefts in Telegram and WhatsApp messengers, including the use of domain name registrations and phishing forms.
