“The main strategy used to prevent the spread of leprosy in the past was the forced isolation of patients in leper colonies. The need for isolation of patients disappeared in the 1940s due to the emergence of sulfones (organic compounds derived from sulfuric acid) and their effectiveness in treating leprosy,” Karamova explained to socialbites.ca. got up.

In 1970, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended the simultaneous use of several drugs for the treatment of leprosy due to the emergence of sulfone-resistant leprosy pathogens. After completing such a comprehensive course, patients are considered cured.

“Now sulfone drugs (dapsone), rifampicin and clofazimine (the latter not registered in Russia) are used to treat patients with leprosy in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization. “In the Russian Federation, active leprosy is treated with drugs such as dapsone and rifampicin,” he said.
