Treatment of acute low back pain takes about six weeks, but there is a high risk of recurrence and development of chronic pain syndrome. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Researchers analyzed Cinahl, Medline and Embase research databases published between 2011 and January 2023. They examined the treatment course for low back pain. Among 28 thousand studies, scientists selected 95 articles containing data from approximately ten thousand patients.
The study showed that pain intensity decreased by about half in the sixth week from the onset of symptoms. However, thereafter it remained almost unchanged and remained at the same level after weeks 26 and 52.
Because there were no adequate studies in patients under 18 or over 60, the findings apply only to young and middle-aged adults.
Scientists concluded that most people with acute low back pain experience significant improvement in the first six weeks but may experience long-term pain and home restrictions. This highlights the importance of developing more effective treatments for chronic pain.
