The video was shot by park owner Gary Saurage. The footage shows a reptile almost completely submerged in a frozen pond. Only part of the crocodile’s nose and the tip of its tail stick out from the ice.

“This animal hibernates, its heart beating three times a minute. Guys, this is amazing. See, this is how crocodiles survive in the ice,” Sauraj says of the footage.

Wanting not to panic, the author of the video explained that the process the reptile goes through is called brumation. According to the owner of the park, reptiles usually try to find a secluded place on land during the cold season, but sometimes they find themselves in the water. The animal then lifts its mouth and exposes its nostrils to the surface of the water to maintain its ability to breathe. Alligators can hibernate from mid-October to early March.
