Curcumin spray suppresses the activity of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and influenza virus. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Journal of Virology (Virol.J).

Scientists tested curcumin spray on human cells infected with viruses. The drug was able to block the interaction between the coronavirus spike protein and the ACE2 receptor. Their contact is required for the virus to enter the cell, and this result could mean that curcumin spray could prevent infection. The drug suppressed the activity of influenza B and influenza A/H1N1 viruses less effectively. However, the spray did not reduce cell viability. However, the drug had almost no effect on the influenza A/H3N2 virus.

Scientists also found that the spray can stimulate the release of antimicrobial peptides by cells in the oral and nasal cavity. It also led to increased production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 in cells in the mouth (but not the nose). This could potentially ease the course of the infection.

Scientists believe that curcumin spray may be effective in blocking the virus from entering human cells, preventing lung damage and reducing the severity of the disease.
