Director of the Institute of Political Studies Sergei Markov on Radio 1 named Possible causes of the Il-76 tragedy in the Belgorod region. He admitted that information about the plane carrying the captured soldiers may not have reached the air defense services of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). An Il-76 military transport aircraft crashed in the Korochansky district of the Belgorod region at around 11:00 Moscow time on January 24. There were 65 Ukrainian military personnel, six crew members and three companions on board. Prisoners were taken for exchange.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claims that the plane was shot down by anti-aircraft missiles launched by the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the Kharkov region.
