Stomach disorders can cause heart attack-like symptoms and can also lead to abnormal heart rhythms. Cardiologist Vadim Zakiev, teacher of the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Russian State University of Social Sciences, told socialbites.ca.
“I know of cases where patients were brought to the cardiac unit with severe chest pain and suspected heart attack. A heart attack was not confirmed in this case, but the patients were found to have erosive damage to their stomachs that masqueraded as a heart attack. On the contrary, there were patients who complained of nausea, vomiting and weakness. They themselves mistook the symptoms for stomach problems, but they actually had a myocardial infarction. Therefore, if you feel unwell, you should consult a doctor to exclude dangerous situations,” explained Zakiev.
Not only stomach erosion, but also hiatal hernia can cause rhythm disturbances such as supraventricular extrasystole, which is felt as an interruption in the heart and is usually harmless.
Shingles is an exacerbation of herpes infection that is characteristic of older people. Sometimes a rash along the nerves arising in the heart area is accompanied by pain – it can be confused with myocardial infarction. Spinal lesions, dorsopathies, and radicular syndromes can also cause pain in the heart area.
However, sometimes gastrointestinal diseases do not take on the appearance of heart disease, on the contrary, they aggravate or cause them.
Any inflammatory disease, including those affecting the gastrointestinal tract and even the skin (psoriasis), increases atherosclerosis, which is associated with an increased risk of stroke and heart attack. There is also the concept of “cor pulmonale” – enlargement of the right side of the heart caused by diseases of the respiratory system, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). “Chronic kidney failure is a strong risk factor for heart problems, and most patients with this condition face a variety of cardiovascular diseases,” he said.
