A lie detector in the hands of a non-expert can cause great harm. The polygraph expert, an employee of the VB Psychophysiology Laboratory, told socialbites.ca that the results of the home test will not correspond to reality. Shvyrkova Institute of Psychology RAS Andrey Uchaev.

According to the expert, various studies show that the ability of an untrained person to detect lies is around 50%. If a person has received special training, for example, in profiling, this ability increases to 75-80%.

“The effectiveness of a polygraph test is approximately 90-95%, but success depends on the qualifications of the person examining the polygraph. It can be anyone who has received higher education and additional training in Russia. There are no special requirements. Therefore, we are faced with a situation where people come to polygraphology because they do not have a special basic education and do not understand many of the subtleties. Ideally, the person examining the polygraph should be a psychophysiologist. The expert noted that you need to understand both psychology and physiology.

According to him, people who purchase a lie detector for home use may misinterpret the results of the study. This can cause problems in relationships between people. As Uchaev notes, it is better to contact a professional.
