American dermatologist Charles Puza said Daily Mail says dark circles under the eyes can be a result of long-term sun exposure, lack of sleep, genetic predisposition, and age-related thinning of the skin.

The expert explained that in most people, as they age, their skin becomes thinner due to decreased collagen production, a protein that forms the basis of the body’s connective tissue. This causes the blood vessels in the area under the eyes to become more visible.

In some people, the proximity of blood vessels to the skin surface is a feature of the body. For this reason, the under-eye area may turn purple or blue even at a young age. To brighten this area, the dermatologist recommends the use of skin care products containing vasoconstrictor ingredients.

It is also stated that exposure to ultraviolet radiation can be the cause of dark circles under the eyes. The skin area around the eyes is particularly sensitive. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause hyperpigmentation and dehydration in the lower eyelid area. Skin hyperpigmentation can also occur in women during pregnancy and lack of sleep. In this case, it is recommended to use skin lightening creams (e.g. based on vitamin C or tranexamic acid). Gentle self-massage and applying cold compresses will also help improve the appearance of the under-eye area.
