30 minutes of moderate-intensity walking reduces blood pressure in women with rheumatoid arthritis. This has been shown by a published study. Journal of Human Hypertension (JHH).

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that causes pain, swelling, and progressive physical limitations. People with rheumatoid arthritis often also suffer from hypertension, and their risk of death from cardiovascular disease is 50% higher than the general population.

Exercise is known to be one of the best non-pharmacological ways to control blood pressure. However, it was not known how they affected blood pressure in arthritis.

The new study involved 20 female volunteers between the ages of 20 and 65 who were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and hypertension. Women of reproductive age were tested during the first seven days of their menstrual cycle.

They were divided into two groups. Some participants walked on the treadmill at a moderate pace for 30 minutes, while the control group stood on the treadmill without any exercise for 30 minutes.

24-hour monitoring showed that, on average, exercise reduced systolic (upper) blood pressure by 5 mmHg; this reduction was associated with a 14% reduction in the risk of death. Blood pressure was also found to decrease after cognitive and physical stress, which are known to increase blood pressure and cardiovascular risk. To create a mentally stressful situation, scientists used a cognitive Stroop test, and to create a physically stressful situation, participants were asked to place their hands in very cold water.

Scientists believe that lowering blood pressure every day through regular activity can significantly improve the health of people with rheumatoid arthritis as well as those with other autoimmune diseases such as lupus.
