At the International Exhibition and Forum “Russia” in the Rosneft pavilion, as part of Genetics Week, popular science lectures were given by geneticists from the Whole Genome Sequencing Center, according to the company’s website.

Alina Demkina, research assistant of the center, gave a lecture on “How to read the genome”. He informed the visitors of the pavilion about the structure of the DNA molecule, the genome and various methods for deciphering the hereditary material. So the audience learned, for example, that all humans are 99.9% genetically identical and that differences only account for 0.1% of the genome. It was also said that it takes about 8 hours for a human cell to completely copy its DNA and that there are about three billion base pairs in the human genome.

In response, the center’s employee, biostatistician and data analysis expert Alexandra Ivanova, gave a conference on “Bioinformatician – the profession of the future”. In it, she demonstrated the features and scope of application of this scientific specialty, and also described how a person’s lifestyle slows down or accelerates the aging process.

As part of the Genetics Week at the Rosneft pavilion, visitors can take part in thematic quizzes on genetics every day. Also in the cinema hall of the pavilion, a video about the Whole Genome Sequencing Center is shown several times a day, in which Severinov talks about the work of this unique scientific organization and its importance for the average person. plans and developments. The center operates with the support of Rosneft within the framework of technological partnership with the Government of the Russian Federation within the scope of the program for the development of genetic technologies.

On Friday, January 19, the pavilion will host the presentation of the “100.000+Me” genetics program. The initiative aims to read the genomes of 100 thousand Russians to improve the diagnosis of genetically determined and socially important diseases. In addition, new approaches are being developed for the treatment of diseases and the creation of suitable drugs. The project is implemented by the Whole Genome Sequencing Center with support from Rosneft.

The international exhibition and forum “Russia” will last on the territory of VDNKh until April 12. The Rosneft exhibition is located in a pavilion built according to the author’s design project.
