Violation of the interaction between the immune system and the nervous system leads to the development of almost all psychopathologies, for example, depression, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia and others. Galina Idova, professor of the Department of Physiology at Novosibirsk State University and principal investigator of the Research Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine, told socialbites.ca.
Immune mechanisms are involved in the development of inflammation of brain cells, which leads to various pathological processes.
“For example, neuroinflammation and immune dysfunction play an important role in the development of Parkinson’s disease, leading to the death of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra of the midbrain (this group of neurons is rich in the dark pigment neuromelanin; their processes reach other parts of the brain, releasing dopamine, which regulates muscle function) He said that he released it and the immunity decreased.
According to the professor, neuroinflammation in depression also leads to changes in the level of serotonin in the brain and suppression of the immune system. All this is accompanied by dysfunction of the hippocampus, which is involved in the mechanisms of emotion formation, memory consolidation and weight reduction.
“Schizophrenia is also a neuroinflammation in the brain, but there is hyperactivation of dopamine systems and stimulation of immune function. In other words, neuroinflammation and immune disorders that occur during these diseases lead to changes in the levels of various chemicals in the brain,” he explained.
According to him, in the future, scientists will be able to combat the diseases listed above by installing sensitive bellows.
