According to a representative of the Icelandic Meteorological Center, fire broke out in at least two houses in Grindavik. Journalists emphasized that the city’s residents were evacuated last night. Benedikt Halldoursson, an earthquake expert from the Icelandic Meteorological Service, explained in an interview with the broadcaster that the protective barriers were able to retain most of the lava. However, because the structures were not completed, at one point lava flowed over the barriers.

The eruption of a volcano located in the southwest of the country, to start Sunday morning, January 14th. A state of emergency was declared in the region. The Civil Protection Agency said a coast guard helicopter was dispatched to assess the situation and exact location. Four volcanic eruptions have been recorded on the peninsula in the last three years.
