Slow movements, tremors and pain in the arms and legs due to increased muscle tone may be symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, but diagnosis cannot be made without MRI. Amina Kindarova, a neurologist at the Docmed clinic, told socialbites.ca.

“Parkinson’s disease can be confirmed if there is a slowdown in movements, tremors in the limbs at rest, and an increase in muscle tone. It usually manifests itself as a feeling of discomfort in one arm, a feeling of heavy and slow movement. Sometimes patients complain of shoulder pain and a diagnosis of parkinsonism is made. After a while, the disease on the same side is diagnosed.” Similar symptoms may occur in the leg. The opposite happens when abnormalities are noticed first in the leg and then in the arm. Speaking to socialbites.ca, Kindarova said, “Only a doctor can determine muscle tone.”

Parkinson’s disease is accompanied by the loss of nerve cells in the brain, leading to a decrease in dopamine levels in the brain. This substance plays an important role in human motivation and physical activity. Drugs that increase its level in the early stages of the disease allow the patient to lead an active lifestyle. Therefore, it is important not to ignore the symptoms and to consult a doctor as soon as possible.

“Diagnosis usually requires an MRI of the brain to rule out other possible causes of the symptoms. In very rare cases, an ultrasound or PET-CT scan of the brain is also necessary.” added Kindarova.
