Researchers from the University of Zurich (Switzerland) found that men’s beliefs about their masculinity influence erectile dysfunction. Results published on: magazine Archives of Sexual Behavior.
Therefore, the idea that masculinity is not a fixed identity, but something that must be constantly gained and can be easily lost, and that the status of men is always under threat, is associated with erection problems in men. According to scientists, such ideas can lead to increased psychological stress, which can lead to dysfunction, especially in the context of sexual activity.
The team reached these results by conducting an online survey of 507 heterosexual men. The survey included questions about participants’ sociodemographic background, sexual functioning, questionable beliefs about masculinity, self-stigma, social desirability, and adherence to traditional masculinity ideologies.
The results showed that men with stronger beliefs about the unreliability of masculinity were slightly more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction. That is, men who agree with statements such as “some boys do not become men no matter how old they are” are more likely to have erection problems.
