Colloidal silver supplements can cause seizures, kidney damage, bluish skin, and in some cases death, but they have no proven benefit and are not recommended. This was reported by daily mail.
Colloidal silver is small particles of silver mixed with water. They are used in the form of nutritional supplements as well as creams to fight infections. There is no evidence of its effectiveness, but side effects are common: seizures, psychosis, neuropathy, blue discoloration of the skin and internal organs, kidney and liver damage.
Doctors warn that colloidal silver supplements are useless at best, but often harmful. The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has noted that colloidal silver may cause poor absorption of medications, including antibiotics and thyroxine (used to treat thyroid deficiency). Some silver creams are approved for use in the United States, but they do not contain colloidal silver. In 2021, daily use of colloidal silver supplements led to the death of 45-year-old Amy Carlson, who also suffered from anorexia and abused alcohol.
Internal medicine specialist Dr Melissa Young told the Daily Mail that colloidal silver should not be taken under any circumstances.
“Silver can enter healthy cells and destroy them, just as it kills bacteria. Topical colloidal silver products may be helpful for minor skin infections, irritations, and burns. The antimicrobial effect of silver may help prevent or treat infection. However, if you find that the treated area becomes red or inflamed after using colloidal silver, you should stop using it and seek medical attention,” Young explained.
