Scientists from Cardiff University analyzed the microbes in the mouth, tongue and dentures of pneumonia patients and compared them with healthy denture users. Researchers concluded that not cleaning dentures regularly increases the risk of pneumonia. This may be because pathogenic organisms can grow on dentures and travel to the lungs through saliva.

As London dentist Charles Ferber explains, the mouth provides the ideal warm and moist environment for bacteria and fungi to grow. For this reason, dentures should be removed from the mouth and cleaned twice a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste free of particles that may scratch the product. It is best to do this in a separate container to prevent the denture from falling down the sink drain. You can also have your dentures cleaned by your dentist or hygienist using an ultrasonic teeth cleaning machine.
