Using earplugs overnight can impair your hearing and lead to infection. The expert told this daily mail.
Earplugs do not allow air to pass through and create a warm, moist environment in the ear canal, increasing the risk of bacterial and fungal infections. That’s why you should avoid using earplugs while sleeping and not use a pair for more than two days in a row, Professor Simon Lloyd, ear, nose and throat consultant at Manchester Royal Infirmary, tells the Daily Mail. Also, during sleep, earplugs can move deeper into the ear canal, and the surgeon will need to remove them. And earplugs made using earwax can cause wax blockage in the ear and temporary hearing loss.
Similar risks apply to headphones. It should be cleaned regularly with alcohol and avoid listening to very loud music as this can damage hair cells in the inner ear and cause hearing loss. A recent research review published in the journal BMJ found that young people are at risk of severe hearing loss when listening to music at 105 decibels. Safe limits are 80 decibels for adults and 75 decibels for children.
