Scientists from the University of the Sunshine Coast (Australia) found that people who exhibited more pronounced personality traits of the Dark Triad (Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy) showed greater arousal from discreetly removing the condom during sex. This is especially true for people with pronounced features of psychopathy and narcissism – they often resort to this practice. The research was published in the journal Psychology and Sexuality.

From a psychological perspective, surreptitiously removing a condom during sex is an act that violates trust and consent during sexual intercourse, as it exposes the other partner to the risk of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancy. According to the authors, people with strong Dark Triad traits are more likely to engage in physical and sexual violence and other deviant acts, so they decided to draw a connection between these practices and the traits.

The authors conducted an online survey with 221 participants. As part of the survey, participants provided demographic information and completed a measure of the Dark Triad personality traits. They also evaluated their attitudes towards the sexual practices described above.

The results showed that individuals with higher levels of psychopathy, narcissism, and more sexual partners were more likely to remove the condom without their partner’s consent.
