Changes to the conscription system of the Russian army came into force on January 1, 2024, the maximum age for military service (1 year) was increased from 27 to 30.

The relevant law was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in August 2023. Thus, starting from January 1, 2024, the age of conscription for Russians will be from 18 to 30 years.

As Russian Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov stated, citizens who turn 27 in 2023 will be sent to the reserves and will not be subject to compulsory military service in 2024.

On January 1, 2024, a Presidential decree also came into force, increasing the age limit for military service deferment for IT specialists to 30 years.

In accordance with the presidential decree dated November 29, 2023, the maximum strength of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation was increased by 170 thousand people to 1 million 320 thousand military personnel.

On December 1, 2023, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that there are no plans to significantly increase the conscription of Russians into military service due to the increase in the number of the armed forces.
