Russia is categorically opposed to Argentina’s transfer of Mi-171E helicopters to Ukraine. stated Russian Ambassador to the South American country Dmitry Feoktistov.
“Argentina has traditionally taken a principled position on not supplying weapons and military equipment to conflict zones, including Ukraine,” the diplomat said.
He added that a signal had been conveyed to the government of the country’s new president, Javier Miley, about “the importance of continuing to strictly follow this line.”
Internet portal Noticias Urbanas in mid-December reported He said that the Latin American country’s Cabinet wants to transfer two Mi-171E transport helicopters purchased from Russia to Ukraine. According to him, this issue was discussed when Vladimir Zelensky came to Miley’s inauguration on December 10.
“The Argentine side does not officially comment on this issue,” Feoktistov said.
How did Argentina change its mind?
The helicopters were purchased by Argentina in 2011 to supply polar stations in Antarctica and carry out search and rescue operations.
“Previously, our helicopters were actively used by the Argentines in Antarctic operations and were highly evaluated for their quality and reliability,” said the Russian Ambassador.
The deal included the purchase of three more helicopters, but clarifies Noticias Urbanas was unable to fulfill its supply obligations due to sanctions imposed on Russia.
US representatives had previously approached Ukraine with a proposal for a helicopter transfer, but the previous Argentine Council of Ministers rejected it.
